Episode 1: �Pilot�
Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy are having problems coming to grips with their parents death. Nothing goes as planned for either of them when a mysterious new student, Stefan Slavatore, attracts Elena�s attention. Which leaves her ex-boyfriend Matt and her rival Caroline in the dark. After Matt�s sister Vicki is bitten by what they think is an animal, it is revealed that Stefan is really a vampire and he isn�t the only one in town.
Episode 2: �The Night of the Comet�
Mystic Falls prepares to celebrate the passing of the comet. While Vicki is in the hospital recovering from her injuries caused by a vampire, Stefan tries to use his abilities to erase Vicki�s attacker from her mind, but he interrupted by Matt. Mr. Tanner warns Jenna about Jeremy�s behavior and tells her that she is doing a bad job of taking care of Jeremy and Elena. Damon and Elena meet for the first time at the Salvatore house and his revelation about Stefan�s past brings Elena closer to learning the truth.
Episode 3: �Friday Night Bites�
Bonnie has a bad feeling about Stefan so Elena invites Bonnie and Stefan to dinner so they can get to know each other. During the dinner, Damon and Caroline show up at her house and Elena invites him into her house. And Stefan gives Elena a necklace with Vervain for protection. At school Tyler tries to humiliate Stefan by throwing a football at him but his plan backfires when Stefan catches the ball and throws it right back.
Episode 4: �Family Ties�
Stefan and Elena go to the town�s annual Founders� Party, hosted by Tyler�s parents. Vicki wants Tyler to take her to the party as his date, but he hesitates. At the party, Damon tells Elena about the Salvatores family history after Stefan tries to cut Damon out of his life. Damon takes an amber crystal from one of the historical artifacts at the party. Meanwhile Stefan uses Caroline as a vessel to poison Damon and when Damon sucks Caroline�s blood and falls ill. The Founders Council realizes that vampires have returned to Mystic Falls and need the Gilbert pocketwatch to find them.
Episode 5: �You�re Undead to Me�
Damon grows weaker and Vicki and Jeremy�s relationship grows stronger. At the car wash Bonnie discovers more about her own powers. Logan uses his charm to get him access to the Gilbert�s house so he can steal the pocketwatch. Elena learns something about Stefan that makes her question his identity.

Episode 6: �Lost Girls�
Stefan explains his past to Elena. The show goes back to 1864 when Damon and Stefan were turned into vampires by Katherine. Meanwhile Damon is trapped inside the Salvatore Boarding House with Vicki and they feed off of each other and Damon turns her. When Stefan finds out he tires to convince her to die before she turns into a vampire.
Episode 7: �Haunted�
Stefan tries to control Vicki�s urges. When Caroline gives Bonnie her witch costume she also gives Bonnie the amber crystal that Damon took from the Founders� Party. At a Halloween party, Vicki attacks Elena and Jeremy and Stefan is forced to take action before she hurts the people in Mystic Falls.
Episode 8: �162 Candles�
Stefan�s friend, Lexi� a 350 year old vampire, comes to Mystic Falls. She helps Elena realize the true value of love and helps her make the first step towards fixing her relationship with Stefan. After Damon alters his memory of Vicki�s death, Jeremy stops doing drugs and putting off homework. Damon gives a box of vervain to Sheriff Forbes and she reveals all of the vampire hunters in town to him. Damon frames Lexi for the death of a local boy.
Episode 9: �History Repeating�
A new history teacher arrives in town, Alaric Saltzman and he wears a ring similar to the one worn by the Vampires in town. Jeremy introduces his new teacher to Jenna who becomes infatuated with Alaric. Bonnie is having dreams about Emily and the girls decide to hold a s�ance. Meanwhile, Damon reveals why he came back to Mystic Falls: to bring Katherine back.
Episode 10: �The Turning Point�
Logan is back and starts killing people, but he doesn�t know who turned him into a vampire. Jeremy returns to his old hobby of sketching fantasy creatures. Matt and Caroline are hanging out more and Matt likes it that way. And Elena discovers Stefan�s secret.
Episode 11: �Bloodlines�
After Elena�s car flips over, Damon chases away the mysterious stranger and Damon frees her from the overturned car. Damon brings the unconscious Elena with him to Georgia to see a witch that could help him open Katherine�s tomb. Elena ends up saving his life in Georgia which creates a bond between them.
Episode 12: �Unpleasantville�
The vampire that has been stalking Elena knew Katherine. Before he is killed by the Salvatore brothers, he reveals how to get into the tomb. Meanwhile, Anna keeps trying to get close to Jeremy because she wanted to get her hands on his ancestor�s journal.
Episode 13:�Children of the Damned�
The episode starts in 1864 with Damon and Katherine. Katherine stops a carriage and feeds on the people in it, then Katherine and Damon share a kiss. Throughout the episode Stefan and Damon recall the actions taken by the towns people in 1864 that lead to the destruction of their relationship. Back in the present, Bonnie�s date turns terrifying when she learns that he is a vampire.
Episode 14:�Fool Me Once�
Elena wakes up to find that she and Bonnie were kidnapped by Anna and Ben. Stefan tries to find her and asks Damon for help, but he refuses to help. With help from Grams, Stefan eventually saves Bonnie and Elena. Jeremy asks Anna to a party in the woods, unaware that she has her own reasons for meeting him there. And with the help of Grams and Bonnie, they are able to reopen the tomb.
Episode 15:�A Few Good Men�
Damon is still upset that Katherine was not in the tomb and Stefan and Elena are worried about his new attitude. The vampire who escaped from the tomb and kills a man in the woods. Alaric discovers that his wife Isobel was Elena�s biological mother and was turned into a vampire at her request. And Alaric learns how special the ring Isobel gave him is. And Elena is determined to find out everything she can about her birth mother.
Episode 16: �There Goes the Neighborhood�
Anna and her mother pay a visit to Damon. Her mother, Pearl want to take control of the town. All of the vampires in the tomb have gotten out and are staying in the old farmhouse outside of town. Pearl offers to help Damon find Katherine if he helps her out and the visit quickly turns violent. Elena, Stefan, Matt and Caroline go out on a double date. And Jeremy intentionally cuts his hand in front of Anna to tempt her.
Episode 17: �Let the Right One In�
A big storm comes to Mystic Falls and blocks out the sun. While out hunting, Stefan is captured by the vampires in town who intend to torture him before they kill him. Damon and Elena convince Alaric to help them free Stefan. And after her car breaks down in the storm, Caroline discovers the remains of Vicky Donovan. Matt and Kelly are heartbroken by the news.
Episode 18: �Under Control�
Stefan struggles to keep control of his urges and Elena�s uncle, John Gilbert, shows up in Mystic Falls. Stefan shows some unusual behavior at the Founder�s Day event. And Elena and Alaric have a conversation about Isobel.
Episode 19: �Miss Mystic Falls�
At the Founder�s Day Gala, Caroline and Elena compete in the Miss Mystic Fall contest. Bonnie returns to town and works with Stefan to overcome some issues. Damon discovers that Stefan is hiding a dangerous secret.
Episode 20:�Blood Brothers�
Stefan tries to come to terms with his past as he and Damon reveal parts of their past to Elena (including how they were turned into vampires). Jeremy and Anna�s relationship continues to grow and Damon an Alaric attempt to track down an invention before Johnathan Gilbert finds it.
Episode 21: �Isobel�
Isobel comes to Mystic Falls and asks that Alaric arrange a meeting with her daughter. Isobel and Elena finally meet, but Isobel doesn�t answer most of Elena�s questions. Isobel order�s Elena to get the mysterious invention from Damon or she will kill all of Elena�s loved ones.
Episode 22: �Founder�s Day� END
It�s Founder�s Day and everyone is preparing for the festivities. Jeremy is still alienated from Elena after all the lies she told him and seeks out Anna�s company. John sets his plan in motion that leads to a destructive and deadly end of the Founder�s Day celebration. Stefan and Damon find the true meaning of being brothers.
